The Artist-in-Training Comfort Zone
Today I have officially left my comfort zone. I have launched a website for my Art! For those who don't know me, you may say "What's the big deal? Everyone has one!" Well, I didn't. I was an ARTIST-IN-TRAINING, not an ARTIST.
I began a journey seven years ago to become a painter. Since that time, I have devoted myself to the rigorous principals of an art student. Attending classes and workshops, watching demonstrations, practicing over and over the concepts I was learning. Slowly, I began exhibiting my work and took baby-steps to market myself as an artist. A member show here, a juried show there, a piece of two at a time with no major commitment or expectations. Over the last year, with the encouragement and support of my wonderful teachers, mentors, and friends, one thing has become apparent to me, I have become an ARTIST! Oh the horror! It has actually been this way for quite some time now, but I have been in denial. It's not that I didn't want to be an artist. That actually was the goal. What I wasn't prepared for was the weight of responsibility I would feel to perform. So, I have done unthinkable things, like turning down large commissions, etc., because surely I was not a real artist yet. I really should be ashamed of myself! But, you know what? I am not! I have taken the time I needed to find my comfort level outside of the "Artist-inTraining" label. To appreciate my work and how it has evolved into my own. Now I can look at my body of work and appreciate it. See myself in it. So now it is time to put myself out there as an ARTIST and share it with others on a wider scale.
I do still consider myself a student. I will still take classes with my teachers and mentors, workshops with those whose work I so admire. But now, I will take myself seriously as a working artist as well! I can be both! Go Me!
